Victorian Hairstyles From Films

The Young Victoria is a 2009 British period dram film that was directed by Jean-Marc Vallee; It is based on the early life and reign of Queen Victoria and her marriage to Prince Albert.

The Films stars Emily Blunt who plays Victoria, and Rupert Friend who plays Prince Albert, who is divine if I may say so myself!

The Young Victoria is one of my favourite films, it shows the life of the Queen and her trials and tribulations of becoming the Queen of England.

With the Hair department they show her age well, from a young teen to when she is older and married.

Below, you can see she is a young girl lots of hair accessories and curls at the front of her face, I like how  they have portrayed her youthfulness and playfulness.

In this image below you can see that the sides of her hair are smooth and sleek down the sides of her face, this look enables the viewer to understand that she is growing up and she is married.

Jane Eyre was originally publish as an Autobiography; it is a novel by Charlotte Bronte and was publish in 1847. The film that stood out for me was the 2011 version with Mis Wasikwska as Jane Eyre.

I have watched the film and it is very depressing, quite and painful for the heart. But when looking at the hairstyles that are given to the women of the period they are enchanting and are good a creating different characters.

For example, Jane Eyre in the film is a ‘Plain Jane’ She is very simple looking and her reflects this a centre parting and hair loops under her ears, which connect into plates into a small bun.

Contrasting to Mrs Reed her guardian, she is wealthy and her hair reflects that it shines and is in good condition; very elaborate style compared to Jane. I also think this is to show her Authority over Jane, domineering and states she is in charge.

The Hair designer on this film was Daniel Phillips:

This Hairstylist has worked on many period films and has a give for recreating these kind of looks. Here are some other films he has done:

I have never actually watched this TV series but one of my sisters friends said she had a bit of an obsession with it and that it reflected Victorian hair and make-up, as you can see from the image below the hair is very romantic and late Victorian, more along the lines of the Gibson Girls.

Bleek House shows a lot of diversity in the way of Victorian Hair and has been really helpful when think what I want my Miss H and Estella to look like.

The image below is very soft and pretty, if I where to use this look it would be for a young miss Havisham.

This look below would be great for Estella, sleek and perfect, with the facial expression as it looks so moody and sharp!
