How is the Gothic depicted in Great Expectations?

How is the Gothic depicted in Great Expectations?

I feel that the Gothic atmosphere is created by the use of the house it self, it shows the state of decay and cobwebs looming everywhere.  Its also depicted in the way everything is staying still nothing is changed all Miss Havishams surroundings are crumbling away in the dark, damp, rotting atmosphere.

How is the grotesque depicted in Great Expectations?

The grotesque is shown by the use of her big wedding table display of her rotting wedding cake and other food; she also hasn't bathed or changed clothing which would mean she must has smelt rancid as well as her home.
Everything was to be preserved in the state she left it.

Estella has been treated like a manipulated puppet to carry own a gender and exact revenge on men; she has been made abnormal to her own desires.

How does Dickens give the uncanny a unique twist within the novel in terms of characterisation?

Magewhich appearing in the graveyard is a uncanny twist, and is always the main element of horror within the Great Expectation book. With Dickens writing you get lost and fall into Pips shoes and it manages to frighten you, I know it did with me when I first read the book when I was in secondary school; imaging this dirty, sweaty man in chains grabbing you in the mist and threatening to cut your throat!
