Great Expectations - Book

Great Expectations is one of the most famous and most re-done films by the master of Victorian Gothic novels by Charles Dickens.

As like many of his books, his characters take on a great and brilliant role and come to life when reading the book by his descriptive analysis;

“That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.”

The plot portrays a lot of sympathy for the way that the British class system was in the nineteenth century, which helps us grasp the severe nature of the world they all lived in, and how children where mistreated.

The novel is centred around a young poor boy called Pip, he lives with his sister, (who is God awful) and her husband Joe who is a very simply man, but is very caring a sweet.

When reading the novel you are in given a descriptive setting of cold misty marshes, the big city of London and the cobwebbed estate where the misunderstood Miss Havisham lives.

When I first read about Pip all I could imagine was a pale little boy struggling to get  by everyday, but was happy with his brother in law as they got on like "The best of friends..."

When the character Estella came into the scene you could tell the clear contrast in nature to what Pip would have looked like compared to her, she would have been pristine, clean and dressed in beautiful expensive clothing, her hair sleek from a middle parting with a high bun and maybe some plaits hooping down the side. That's image in my head!

Now Miss Havisham is one of the more creative characters and most peoples favourite, as she is the most diverse, in my opinion. When I imaged her I saw her as an old women, even if she was meant to be younger I would still see her as older as I think when you are unhappy and have been heartbroken  it would make you age faster.

I pictured her with a white and gaunt complexion as she hasn't been outside in many years, I would have expected her hair to dishevelled and unkempt with curls slowly loosing its grip in her hair. Her hands and nails would be dirty, long and curled. I also think as she walks with a Cain that she would be slight hunched.
